Bilgisayar ve internet teknolojisine bağlı olarak gelişen ve yaygınlaşan sosyal medya, kimi çevrelerce yeni medya olarak da adlandırılmaktadır. Sosyal medya (yeni medya) başta gençler olmak üzere, çocuk ve yetişkinlerin de sürekli olarak kullandığı bir mecradır. Ancak bu mecranın, insanlığa ne getireceği ise belirsizdir. Bu iletişim biçimi eskiye oranla iletişimi kolaylaştırsa da pek çok sorunu da beraberinde getirmektedir. Sosyal medyanın bilinçsizce kullanımı ise bu sorunların başlıca nedenini oluşturmaktadır. Yapılan araştırmaların sonuçları incelediğinde internet ve sosyal medya kullanımının özellikle liseli ve üniversiteli gençler arasında oldukça yaygın olduğu görülmektedir. Buna bağlı olarak bu çalışmanın amacı, gençlerin sosyal medya kullanım amaçlarını ve sosyal medyanın yarattığı riskleri açığa çıkarmak, sosyal medya okuryazarlığının önemini ortaya koymaktır.
