Abstract:

Arguments on the problem of knowledge and its reality has started in the Ancient Greek civilization, and Plato and Aristotle provided answers to shed light into that for the following centuries. With Islam the message of “knowing Allah’s prescence and unity” was given. Islam philosophers used Koran, hadiths and existing philosophies of the day to pursue ideal forms and made comments on knowledge, its source, its tools, reality, types of knowledge; and at the point of reaching the “truth” they attributed significant meanings to the heart. Classical Turkish poetry that is kneaded with Islamic mysticism looked for the ways to reach the “absolute reality” and by referencing Koran, hadiths and Islam philosophers gave an aesthetic form to the subjects such as reality of truth and its sources in their poetry. A sufi poet and a Mevlevi sheikh Şeyh Galip sings the Last song of the swan and he uses heart as the source and tool of the knowledge. In this study, document analysis method will be used to examine heart as the source of knowledge in Şeyh Galip poetry and as a result, stemming from the example of Şeyh Galip, emphasis will be on the importance of heart to obtain knowledge and how the understanding of knowledge in Islam effects Classical Turkih Poetry.
