The aim of this study is to study the metaforic perceptions of class teacher candidates to the concept of child participation in terms of gender, class level, socio-economic level and family education. This research is a qualitative research and the study group is formed by 173 class teachers candidates who study at the University of Sakarya School of Education in the 2016-2017 Education-Teaching Spring Semester. As a data collection tool, a developed form has been used to determine the metaforic perceptions of class teacher candidates to the concept of "child participation". During the collection of data, the class teacher was asked to express what they compared the concept of "child participation" and to indicate the reasons for these expressions. Documents are analyzed by the method of content analysis. The different 136 metaphors produced by class teacher candidates were gathered under 14 conceptual categories. The majority of the metaphors appear to be gathered in the conceptual category of "child participation as a need" and the minimum of the metaphors in the conceptual category of "child participation as a protection". When the distribution of metaphors to conceptual categories is studied, the focus in the conceptual category of child participation as a requirement in terms of the size of the gender variable has not changed; in terms of the size of the class level, the level of education of parents, the number of brothers and sisters and the amount of income variables, the metaphors are concentrated in different conceptual categories. Teachers educating institutions are recommended to organize the child participation concept that class teacher candidates see as more necessary in other conceptual categories and educational processes in such a way that include the child participation concept not included in this study but also the democratic category identified with the child participation.
The purpose of this study is to examine the primary school teacher candidates' metaphorical perceptions about child participation in terms of gender, grade level, socio-economic level, family educational status. In this research, qualitative research method was used. The study group consisted of 173 primary school teacher candidates studying at Sakarya University Faculty of Education on Spring Semester of 2016-2017. To collect data, a specific form, developed for the determination of primary school teacher candidates' metaphorical perceptions about “child participation”, was used. During the data collection process, primary school teacher candidates were asked to express what they understood from the concept of “child participation” and the reasons for their expressions. Documents were analyzed with content analysis method. 136 different metaphors created by primary school teacher candidates were gathered under 14 conceptual categories. It is observed that the maximum metaphor was gathered in the conceptual category of “as a requirement for child participation”; while at last place was the category “child participation as guardian”. Examining the distribution of metaphors according to the conceptual categories, it was shown that conceptual dimensions of child participation as a requirement variable did not change in terms of gender; while metaphors were condensed on different conceptual categories in terms of grade level, parent education level, number of siblings, and the amount of income variables. It has been recommended that teacher training institutions organize their educational processes by including other conceptual categories.
