Abstract:

Translation has been of vital importance throughout human history. It has served as a bridge connecting people who speak different languages. It has led to advancements in every area in a society. Translation provided a means of helping nations get to know one another, work together and develop themselves through cultural exchange throughout the history. An area where translation is very vital is literature translations. A cultural transmission and the introduction of a new literary work take place through translating a literary work from source language to target language. Upon the understanding that translation is not a mechanical and simple process, translation has become a scientific discipline. For many years, researchers and theoreticians have introduced different theories on translation studies. These theories shed light on the translation process. Translations of any kind require specialization. This study especially deals with the difficulties encountered during the translations of sayings, idioms, proverbs and verses in terms of the literary translation. The importance of the translator’s understanding of both cultures is emphasized once more. Otherwise, it is possible that the message written in the source langueage may be incompletely or insufficiently transferred into the target language. In this work, how phrases, idioms, Turkish folk poems and sayings in the book called Huzur (Tranquility) of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpınar, one of the Rebuplic Era Turkish Literature's most important figures, will be relayed in the Arabic language in the light of Itamar Even Zohar's plural string theorem. It will be investigated whether the translation is "sufficient" or "acceptable" according to the plural string theorem.
