Abstract:

Throughout history, written and spoken translations have played a crucial role in interhuman communication. Of all the different types of entities marketed in society, translation and interpreting businesses offer services as a market offering. Businesses fail, but they have a responsibility towards stakeholders and employees within themselves and towards others including the society. They must put the customer at the heart of the business. They have to build lasting relationships by creating value for customers in order to capture value from customers in return - now and in the future. Sustainability is a concept that goes beyond caring for the needs and wants of today’s customers. It also means having concern for tomorrow’s customers in assuring the survival and success of the business, shareholders, employees, and the broader world in which they all live. Translation and interpreting services is an industry which attracts customers from all kinds of markets from consumer markets to business markets and from global markets to governmental markets. Neglecting the long-run interests of consumers and society in delivering these services can be regarded as a disservice to them.
