Tanzimat yıllarından itibaren Türkçenin kullanımı etrafındaki tartışmalar ve Türkçe hakkında yapılan araştırmalar gittikçe artmıştır. Türkçe, müstakil bir dil olup olmadığından nasıl yazılacağına dair birçok problem etrafında eserlere konu olmuştur. Nitekim 1860’lı yıllardan itibaren değişik yaklaşımları içeren makale ve kitaplar kaleme alınmıştır. Bu makalelerde öne çıkan hususlardan biri, Türkçe üzerine kaleme alınan eserlerin çok az olduğu yönündedir. 1911 yılındaki ‘Yeni Lisan Hareketi’, Türkçe etrafında yapılan tartışmaların kazandığı istikamet adına önemli bir göstergedir. Bu metin aynı zamanda Türkçenin kullanımına ilişkin sonraki birçok ismi etkilemiştir. II. Meşrutiyet’in ardından sadece ‘Yeni Lisan Hareketi’ değil başka bazı isimler de eser kaleme almıştır. Bu yıllarda eser kaleme alan isimlerden biri, Cezmi Ertuğrul’dur. 1917 yılında kaleme aldığı Lisan ve Edebiyatımız adlı eserinde Cezmi Ertuğrul, dilin ontolojik boyutundan başlayarak toplumsal realitesine değin geniş bir çerçevede tartışmasını yapar. Bu tartışmadan hareketle Türkçenin meselelerini irdeler. Tartıştığı konuların bugün dahi güncelliğini koruduğu dikkati çeken bir husustur. Ertuğrul, eserinde gerek ortaya koyduğu tezler gerek metodolojisi ile Türkçenin tarihinde önemli bir eser kaleme almış olur. Eser, Türkçenin dilbilim tarihinde başlangıç adına önemli bir aşamadır. Bu makale, Cezmi Ertuğrul’un öncelikle bilim dünyasında yanlış bilinen kimliğini aydınlatma ve söz konusu eserini tahlilî bir tarzda inceleme amacındadır.

Debates about the use of Turkish and researches on Turkish have been constantly increased since the years of Tanzimat Reform era. Turkish has been subject to many books in various issues from whether it is an independent language to how to write it. As a matter of fact, articles and books including various approaches have been written since 1860s. One of the issues that strike attention is the fact that number of articles on Turkish language is very few. ‘New Language Movement’ in 1911 is an important indication of the course of debates on Turkish. This text also affected many subsequent names about the use of Turkish. Following the Second Constitutional Monarchy not only ‘New Language Movement’ but also some other names were written. One of the names that produced books in those years is Cezmi Ertuğrul. In his master piece Language and Our Literature written in 1917, Cezmi Ertuğrul deals with social reality of language commencing from ontological aspect of it. He scrutinizes matters of Turkish. It is highly remarkable that the issues he dealt with are still up-to-date matters. Ertuğrul wrote a significant book in the history of Turkish with the thesis he put forth in his book as well as his methodology. The book is a significant step as a commencement of Turkish in the history of Linguistics. This article aims at shedding light on the wrongly known identity of Cezmi Ertuğrul in the world of social science and analyzing the abovementioned book.
