Abstract:

The concept of immigration, which has many impacts on the environment and social life, like natural disasters, is defined as a "social catastrophe". In the negative consequences of immigration, the first thing that occurs is the issues related to housing. New housing areas arising from the need for housing bring many problems with them. Due to its location and socio-economic characteristics, Kocaeli is always under the influence of immigrants in the historic process. In this study, the impact of migration on the settlements is reflected by the example of Kocaeli. At the beginning of the study; the definition of migration was made, the types, causes and consequences were explained. Later, the location of Kocaeli was described, the immigration situation in Kocaeli and the negative consequences of the immigration in Kocaeli, especially in the case of housing, were indicated with examples of photos. The purpose of the study is to provide information about immigration and to explain the impact of immigration on settlements by the example of Kocaeli, one of the most migratory regions. In the results of the study, there are also a number of recommendations on what to be taken into consideration when building new settlements. This study is intended to be a source for future research with an interdisciplinary understanding.
