Abstract:

Through the history, Turks adopted many different religious belief systems and translated these systems’ holy books into their own language. When Turks adopted Islam in 10th century, in that era and the following eras, they started to translate The Holy Quran.  The first example of the translation was seen in Karahanli Turkish and these translations contuniued throughout the centruies. The first examples were under line translations, however, in the latter examples, exegesises which are developed with hadiths and hearsays emerged. One of these exegesises is “Exegesis of Nogmani” which is written in Kazan-Turkic language. Nogman Samani became Abdünnasir Kursavi’s student and got educated in his madrasah. He finished the translation into Kazan-Tatar Turkish of The Holy Quran in two volumes, in the beginning of 20th century, which his master started to translate but couldn’t finish. At the same time, this translation shows multidialectism feature. Bilingualism or bidialectism have been studied for approximately hundred years and started with the studies of Western Turkish works, however, it is not only seen in Western Turkish texts but also in Eastern and Northern Turkish texts. At the same time, some of the works contain distinctive elements of the historical Turkish writing languages such as West/Oghuz, East/Cagatay and North/Kıpçak that we encounter multidialectism feature. In this article, example of Surah Yasin from the second volume of Exegesis of Nogmani’s multi dialectism features is examined in terms of phonology, morphology and vocabulary.
