This study aims at finding out whether sample text analysis or dictation activities are more effective in teaching writing skills. While using the dictation studies in writing classes has been considered as a traditional way for a long time, the combination of text analysis and writing classes has been thought as a contemporary approach recently. So as to develop writing skills of the students, there is no doubt that both methods are useful. However, the results obtained from the comparison of the experimental and control groups indicate that the students who were involved in sample text analysis have been more successful than those involved in dictation studies. Since the students who were involved in sample text analysis can comprehend lexical items, syntax, the unity of writing composition more systematically; they have a better command of French.
