Abstract:

An Evaluation on the Effect of Discourse Use in Teaching English 1Dr. Zana Yalcinkaya This study, concerned with the ad hoc communicative approaches in the language classes, attempts to examine the discourse based approaches in language teaching from the perspective of discourse and pragmatics. Although there are several new approaches to language teaching, these approaches are insufficient to achieve the functional and communicative goals of the language. One of the underlying reasons for this is the inadequate and misuse of discourse. In other words, the fact that structural language teaching is predominant in present day language teaching, and that language teaching is carried out in the conventional way, leads to discarding the discourse. This causes an impediment in achieving the desired goals in teaching. Our argument depends on the claim that how satisfactory is the approach of conventional sentence based language teaching, that is, decontextualized language proceeding in achieving the goal of language teaching from the perspectives of both theoretical and practical aspects. Furthermore, texts which are the significant features of the discourse-oriented language teaching are interpreted with context. Keywords: Discourse, Language Teaching, Context, Text
