Uluslararası barış ve güvenliğin korunması, toplumları oluşturan bireylerin temel hak ve özgürlüklerinin korunmasından geçmektedir. Bu bakımdan, uluslararası barış ve güvenliği koruma görevini üstlenen Birleşmiş Milletler, bu görevini yerine getirirken insan haklarının korunmasına büyük önem vermiştir. Daha önce yaşanan acı tecrübelerin tekrar yaşanmaması adına, Birleşmiş Milletler tarafından çeşitli insan hakları sözleşmeleri kabul edilmiş ve bu sözleşmeler aracılığıyla insan hakları korunmaya çalışılmıştır. Fakat insan haklarının korunması Birleşmiş Milletlerin temel amacı olmadığından dolayı, BM sözleşmelerinde öngörülen koruma mekanizmaları insan haklarına etkin bir koruma sağlayamamıştır. Her şeye rağmen evrensel nitelikte bir örgüt olan Birleşmiş Milletlerin oluşturmuş olduğu bu koruma mekanizmaları, uzun vadede daha geniş çaplı bir korumanın sağlanabilmesi için temel teşkil etmektedir.
The preservation of international peace and security passes through the preservation of the fundamental rights and freedoms of individuals who make up communities. In this regard, the United Nations, which is committed to the protection of international peace and security, has given great importance to the protection of human rights while performing this mission. In order to prevent the previous painful experiences from regaining, the United Nations has adopted various human rights treaties, and through these treaties human rights are being protected. However, as the protection of human rights is not the main objective of the United Nations, the protection mechanisms provided for in the United Nations Treaties have not been able to provide an effective protection of human rights. Nevertheless, these protective mechanisms created by the United Nations, an organization of universal nature, are the basis for a wider protection in the long run.
