Abstract:

Being Part of In Equality/ Inequality: The Perception of Social Gender in MardinThis article explores how in Mardin where different cultures and religions come together social gender is constructed according to the cultural make-up of the region and what social mechanisms produce this gender system. To achieve this aim attention is given to how “gender” is shaped in the different layers of religion, culture, family, space, politics, work and education. In particular it will be shown through thorough conservation what impact religion and culture have on the topic of how the perception of the “body” by the people in the region and naturally also the social gender mechanisms come together. The social inequality based on gender has shown flexibility in the cultural fabric through the new possibilities that modernism has brought. Although traditional social resistance still continues in the religious, economic and political discourses the new and modern confrontations brought about by urbanisation appears to have broken this resistance.
