Abstract:

In this study, it is aimed to determine whether there is a difference between the media and television literacy levels of teacher candidates and the frequency of their watching television, reading newspapers/magazines and Internet usage. Survey model was used in this study. Data was collected by using the “Media and Television Literacy Levels Scale” which was developed by Korkmaz &Yeşil (2011). The sample of the study included a total of 363 teacher candidates (102 male and 261 female) who studied in the Elementary Education Department of Canakkale Onsekiz Mart University. The results of the study showed that the frequency of Internet usage is a variable that has not significant effect on the media and television literacy levels of teacher candidates. However, significant differences were found between media and television literacy levels of teacher candidates and the frequency of watching television and reading newspapers/magazines. These differences result in average hours spent watching television of students' (0-1, 2-3, and 4-5 hours in a day) and average hours that students spent reading newspapers/magazines (2-3 hours in a day)
