The aim of this study is to determine the effect of concept cartoons on 7th grade students’ academic achievement and conceptual understanding in “Solar System and Beyond” unit. The study was conducted with 31 students in total, 15 of whom were in the experimental group and 16 of whom were in the control group, who were studying at a primary school. For this purpose, semi-experimental pattern with pre-test and posttest control group was used in the study. The data of the research were collected via Achievement Test, Conceptual Understanding Test and semi-structured interviews. Data obtained were analyzed through the analysis program SPSS16. Mann-Whitney U test which uses nonparametric analysis was used for group points obtained from academic achievement test and the conceptual understanding test. At the end of the study, there is no difference in academic achievement. There is meaningful difference in conceptual understanding test. It has been identified that application reduces students’ misconceptions that are available, it doesn’t reveal new misconceptions and it has provided students with a better understanding. According to the data obtained via semi-structured interviews, students have expressed that they like teaching process with concept cartoons, and lessons are fun.
