This study discusses general features of Japanese political system. In this paper, the development of Japanese political system has been analyzed in two significant different periods. The first period covers the time span from 1868 to 1945. The second one lasts from 1947 until today. The first period of Japanese political system between 1868 and 1945 can be regarded as unstable. In this period, the political system led Japan to an authoritarian governmental structure. During this period, the participation of civil society in the political process was enormously limited. In the second period, lasting from 1947 until today, political system can be considered as quite stable. Although some changes were carried out, the political system has remained largely coherent and has proven its eventual characteristics until today. During this period, there are possibilities of participation in political process by wider range of civil society. In short, the whole Japanese society could participate in policy making process of the country.
