It is necessary to build a solid future to know the history of the nations that shows common characteristics and values of them. Nations exist with their memories like human beings and take firm steps forward. As the human beings who can’t form their future without remembering their history, the nations which don’t know and give enough importance to their history cant’t find solutions to today’s issues or can’t form their future. Bayat, today, is a district of Çorum and one of the oldest settlements in the area. It was sometimes called Bayat or Bayat Divanı in some of the Ottoman documents and land registries belonging to the years between 1530 and 1576. In the beginnings of 1800s, Bayat was a sub-district of Iskilip but it didn’t take too long. In Kastamonu and Ankara annuals, Bayat was written as a village of Iskilip. Documents of 19th century shows that the administrative divisions changed several times. Bayat was decided to be a sub-district in 1911 and was named as Alagöz. Thus, along with Bahaeddin (Nahadan), Bayat and Alagöz were used to name the area. It is aimed to give light to the administrative situation of Bayat in Ottoman and Republice Periods. In this study, the pre-Ottoman history of Bayat is touched briefly and then detailed information are given about the situation of Bayat in Ottoman period, settled phratries and tribes in Bayat and the developments in the Republic period.
