Kurgusal eserleri kurgusal olmayan eserlerden ayıran temel ölçütlerden bir tanesinin semantik özellikler olduğu genelde kabul edilir. Kurgusal eserlerin metin dışına gönderimde bulunmadığı, eserin yaratıcısının herhangi bir öne sürümde bulunmadığı ve dolayısıyla bu eserlerde geçen ifadelerin doğru ya da yanlış olamayacağı savunulur. Bu çalışmada kurgusal eserlerin çeşitliliği göz önüne alındığında söz konusu argümanın geçersiz olacağı iddia edilmektedir. Kurgusal eserlerin içinde geçen ifadelerin, onları ortaya koyandan bağımsız olarak içerikleri olduğu ve kurgusal ifadelerin doğru ya da yanlış olabildikleri gösterilecektir.
