Algebra, an important subject area of mathematics, requires the power to do abstraction. Therefore, it is important that transition process from arithmetic to algebra is well-structured for students who encounter in 6th grade first time with algebra learning area. Due to the fact that the base of the algebra is composed of alphabetic symbols, alphabetic symbols have been taken into account in the research. The purpose of this research is to examine the misconceptions of the 6th grade students about the meaning of the letters in the context of the transition process from arithmetic to algebra and to compare these misconceptions with students’ mathematics attitudes and self-efficacy. The group of the research is composed of 40 sixth-grade students who are studying in a state secondary school in İstanbul European side in 2016-2017 academic year. In the study data have been collected by the "Misconception Test About Letters’ Meaning", Attitude Scale and Self-Efficacy Scale. In the study, a mixed method using both qualitative and quantitative data has been used. According to the findings of the study, it has been seen that the students have difficulty in understanding the letters. The relationship between the level of students' illusion about letters and attitude and self-efficacy is in the evaluation process. According to the findings obtained, various suggestions will be made to the researchers.
