Sultan Mamdûh (d. 1263/1847) is a sufi who composed voluminous poetical work in the field of sufi literature. The work that stands out among his voluminous oeuvre is Makhzan al-Asrâr that contains Arabic, Persian and Turkish poems. This work deals with divine love based on the doctrine of the unity of being (wahdat al-wujûd). Some of the topics treated thus include God’s unity, His names and attributes, and the essence of things. In this article, I discuss the reason why Sultan Mamdûh composed poetry and study a variety of topics such as characteristics of his poetry, themes of knowledge and love as presented in the work, and the sufi symbols/allegories employed therein. Finally, I make an assessment of the Sultan Mamdûh’s poems of boasting (fakhriyyât) and his poetic competence.
