Each country has its own specific type of one or more traditional houses. In general, traditional houses were built from materials offered by nature near the location of the houses. When we study traditional houses that survived until today, we can observe that architects designed buildings suitable for the culture of the country and really prosperous despite limited construction technology. These houses are considered to be environmentally friendly due to the use of natural ventilation methods and natural materials. One of the best examples for this type of houses is the Islamic traditional houses located in Egypt-Cairo. Those houses, which survived until today and exist in Cairo, were chosen as a study topic for uniting more than one value reflecting the features of the houses built in this period. Today, those architectural structures succeeded in being the source of inspiration for some designers. In this paper, the importance of taking more advantage of those structures has been emphasized. In addition to literature research, houses built between the 15th century and the 18th century (Mamluk and Ottoman era) have been determined and examined to preserve its originality and reflect the reasons behind the formation of Islamic architecture in Egypt - Cairo. The fact that there are not many publications about this subject in Turkish language and other languages and also the need for written sources, increases the importance of this study. As today in Egypt and especially in Cairo the architecture was affected from the West without considering its geographic and cultural properties, in this study by examining Islamic houses in Cairo it is expected to light the way for today’s architecture.
