Bu çalışmada, XVI. yüzyılda yaşamış çok yönlü bir Osmanlı âlimi olan Birgivî Mehmed Efendi’nin (ö. 981/1573) hayatı, eserleri, ilmî kişiliği ve eğitim anlayışının formal ve informal bağlamda incelenmesi amaçlanmıştır. Bu kapsamda Birgivî’nin eğitim anlayışı; eğitim-öğretime ve bu yöndeki toplumsal gelişmelere katkısı ekseninde ele alınmış, bu çerçevedeki eğitim yaklaşımı, yöntem ve ilkeleri ortaya konulmuştur. Çalışmada, tarama modeli benimsenmiş, literatür taraması ve doküman incelemesi/analizi yöntemleri kullanılmıştır. Bu çerçevede konuyla ilgili kaynaklar taranmış, Birgivî Mehmed Efendi ile ilgili eserlerden ve konuyla ilgili yapılan benzer çalışmaların bulgularından faydalanılmıştır. Ulaşılan dokümanlar ve bulgular, doküman analizi sonucu çalışmanın problemi, amacı, yöntemi çerçevesinde belli temalar altında tasnif edilmiş ve literatür ışığında değerlendirilmiştir. Çalışmada ulaşılan bulgulara göre; Birgivî Mehmed Efendi ilmî kişiliği, düşünce/anlam dünyasının merkezinde yer alan hayata eleştirel bakışı ve mert, tavizsiz yapısı ile ön plana çıkmaktadır. Toplum üzerinde, örgün eğitimde müderrisliği, yaygın eğitimde vaazları ile etkili olmuş, ilmî kişiliği, eğitimciliği, ilkeleri, eleştirel yaklaşımı ve tartışmaları ile bir döneme damgasını vurmuştur. Pedagojik ve andragojik yaklaşım ile medreselerde öğrencilerin, camilerde halkın eğitimini amaçlamıştır. Tedris, telif ve irşâd faaliyetleri ile fonksiyonel olarak toplum üzerinde etkili olmuş, hurafe ve batıl inançların karşısında yer almış, eğitimde eleştirel yaklaşımı benimsemiştir. Dinî ve sosyal sorunlara duyarsız kalmamış, söz-davranış uyumu, bilimsel temelli fikirleri ve toplumun her kesiminin anlayacağı eserleri ile toplumda bir zihniyet dönüşümünün gerçekleşmesi için çaba sarfetmiştir. Kur’an’ın farz kıldığı ve Hz. Peygamber (sav)’in benimsediği “emr-i bi’l-ma’rûf ve nehy-i ani’l-münker” ve “itidal” ilkesi ekseninde eğitim anlayışını temellendirmiş ve hayatının sonuna kadar eğitim faaliyetlerinden hiç ayrılmamıştır. Sonuç olarak Birgivî’nin, halen dünyanın farklı ülkelerinde okunan eserleri ile günümüzde de etkisi devam eden uluslararası düzlemde dünyaya mal olmuş idealist bir eğitimci olduğu söylenebilir.
In this study, a versatile Ottoman scholar Birgivī Mehmed Efendī's (d. 981/1573) life, works, scientific personality and education is aimed at examining the formal and informal context. In this context, Birgivī’s understanding of education; and its contribution to education and social developments in this direction has been discussed and education approach, methods and principles have been put forward within this framework. In the study, literature scanning and document analysis methods were used by adopting a screening model. In this context, related sources were searched, the works related to Birgivī Mehmed Efendī and the findings of similar studies were used. The obtained documents and findings were classified under certain topics within the framework of the problem, aim and method of the study as a result of document analysis and evaluated in the light of literature. According to the findings; Birgivī Mehmed Efendī comes to the forefront with his scientific personality and his uncompromising structure, which looks critically at the center of the world of thought / meaning. He had an impact on society with his professorship in formal education, his sermons in non-formal education, and his scientific personality, educatorship, principles, critical approach and debates. With the pedagogical and andragogical approach, he aimed to educate students in madrasahs and public education in mosques. Teaching, royalty and guidance activities have been functionally effective on society. He was opposed to superstition and adopted a critical approach in education. He did not remain insensitive to religious and social problems, he made efforts to realize a mentality transformation in society with his word-behavioral harmony, scientifically based ideas and works that will be understood by all segments of society. The Qur'an is mandatory and the Prophet adopted "emr-i bi'l-ma'rūf and nehy-i ani'l-münker "and based on the principle of "moderation" never abandoned educational activities until the end of his life. It can be said that Birgivī is an idealist educator who has become an internationally influential world with his works still being taught in different countries of the world.
