Özet:

Saint Vincent de Paul French school is a school which has been built by foreigners who lived in Turkey in between late 19th century and 20th century. Selamsız area of Bağlarbaşı has so many foreign schools located right next to each other and Saint Vincent de Paul French School is one of those. The school was built in 1883, has been exposed to some interventions caused by not having enough space for the increase in the number of students studying in the school 25 years after it had been built. In 1967, because of a change in ownership, a new senseless function has been given to the building and the new users didn’t perform any maintenance on the building. The result of these actions is that, the building can no longer be used and it causes danger to the people who live nearby. In 2013, the building was restorated by the Municipality of Üsküdar, and nowadays it’s being used by a private education institution. The evaluation of the protection of historic buildings and modern environment is done with physical protection and adaptive reuse. If the user and function changes of the adaptive reuse made by experts, it has great importance for protecting and extending the life of the structure. Because in some cases the changes have more of a negative effect than a positive one and it leads to the deformation of structure intact. Except all these deformations in the structure, the changes in the building also affects the memory of the people who live nearby. The building has been chosen as the subject of the final thesis for Master’s degree in Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University in 2008-2010. In the example of Saint Vincent de Paul French school, precautions to prevent deteriorations are evaluated and the new function of the building is reviewed. For making those analyses the survey, restitution and restoration projects of the building was drawn.
