Allah ile insanlar arasında bir iletişim şekli olan vahiy; Allah’ın bazı bilgileri, insanlar arasından seçmiş olduğu peygamberlerine göndermesidir. Hz. Peygamber bir taraftan kendisine indirilen dini insanlara ulaştırırken (Tebliğ) diğer taraftan da dinin emirlerini açıklıyordu (Tebyîn). Dinin kendisi vahye dayandığı gibi onun açıklamaları da vahye dayanması gerekir. Kur’an’da Hz. Peygambere hem kitap hem de hikmet verildiğinden bahsedilmektedir. Kitap ve Hikmet, ikisi de Allah tarafından verildiği için her ikisi de vahiyle ilişkilidir. Hz. Peygamber Kur’an’ın haricinde de vahiy alıyordu. Bu konuda birçok ayet ve hadisler vardır. Sünnetin de bir kısmı vahiy olmasına rağmen Kur’an gibi değildir. Aralarında derece farkı vardır. Kur’an hem lafız ve hem de mana olarak Allah’a aittir. Sünnetin belli bir kısmı, mana olarak Allah’a lafız olarak Hz. Peygamber’e aitti
