Abstract:

The transformation of the central urban areas of today’s metropolities in accordance with the characteristics of collapse indicates a universal situation that can be observed in the examples of all industrialized countries. In recent period, it appears that the distress areas located in the center of the city, for example, in Istanbul, have become areas where the poor and rural immigrant population is concentrated, seeking solutions for accommodation. The Eminönü-Suleymaniye Region in Istanbul is attracted by the characteristic of being a settlement unit where low-income immigrant groups are constantly feeding, urban poverty exists and re-produced. Again, this area has the character of a settlement where the (poor) immigrants who come to Istanbul to work and send money to their families for most of the seasonal. This study, through the example of single rooms, addresses the place preference of immigrants in the city center area of Istanbul, immigration dynamics and immigrant qualities, poverty conditions, housing and work qualities.
