Kur'an'ın indiği dönemde okuma yazma bilenlerin sayısı çok azdı. Arap yazısı gelişmemişti. Noktalama ve hareke işaretleri yoktu. Bu sebeple Peygamberimiz müslümanlara bazı kelimeleri farklı şekillerde okumalarına müsaade ediyordu. Kıraat konusu müsteşriklerin çok eleştirdikleri konuların başında gelmektedir. Kur'an'da cemel ve cümülat kelimeleri deve anlamına geldiği gibi, farklı okunuşlarla halat, ip, kütük anlamlarına da gelmektedir.
