The second half of the XIX century is a period when the revolution of industrialization based on the steam technology was experienced in the West. At the same time, this period had become an era in which the culture of exhibitions started and widespread in the world. The Ottomans also appear to become interested industrialization and parallel to that in the exhibitions within the framework of modernization efforts after the Imperial Edict of Reorganization in 1839 and Imperial Edict of Reform in 1856. The interest of the Ottomans in exhibitions started with the participation at the London Exhibition in 1851, and later continued with the participation at the exhibitions in Paris in 1855 and in London in 1862. The success and acquired experiences led the Ottomans to organize the 1863 Ottoman General Exposition (Sergi-i Umumi-i Osmani), in İstanbul at the beginning of the year 1863. More than ten thousand Ottoman agriculture, handicraft and industry products were exhibited in this exhibition, which was opened after a short preparation period of three-four months on 27 February 1863 and remained open until 1 August 1863 located in private buildings built at Sultanahmet Square in İstanbul. Austria, France and the United Kingdom from abroad, had participated with the agricultural machines and tools. Considering the country's agricultural structure, the organizers of the exhibition limited the participation of the Western countries with agricultural machines and tools through the regulations (directive) they prepared. 1863 - Ottoman General Exposition had been useful in terms of exhibiting traditional artistic products besides the underground resources and a variety of agricultural products of the Empire. It had been observed that the agricultural machinery and equipment from abroad were capable to contribute to the development of Turkish agriculture. It is to understand that one hundred and fifty thousand visitors had attended this exhibition, and around one thousand people came from abroad. And it is known that the cost of the exhibition reached to 2.5 million guruş, but the in revenue was only 450,000 guruş and the difference was covered by the Sultan Abdülaziz, who was closely interested and inaugurated the exhibition. The Ottomans continued to participate in the international exhibitions until the end of the century and despite of a continuous exhibition space project was programmed in Istanbul in 1894 thanks to the great experience acquired, this project was not realized due to the earthquake in 1894. But it has been observed that the Bursa Exhibition was organized in 1909.
