Abstract:

Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque is located in Aksaray square, in Fatih. It was built in 19th century by Sultan Abdülaziz’s mother Pertevniyal Valide Sultan. Construction works began in 1869 and completed in 1871. The architect who designed the mosque is Sarkis Balyan. This mosque appears to be one of the important examples of late Ottoman religious architectural style which was a mixture of western eclecticism and orientalism Meriç, 1997 . An intensive stone work and a use of various types of limestone are the main features of the facades. Different alteration morphologies are observed related to diffent types of limestones. The main alteration type is surface loss caused by flaking or by dissolution and leaching. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the existing state of the building, determine the causes of the decay mechanisms and identify the conditions in order to slow down the rate of decay. The mapping of the various materials used in the facades and weathering maps for each facade are prepared in order to evaluate the existing state of the building. Some analyses are carried out both in the field and in the conservation laboratory to determine the causes of deteriorations. The results of the laboratory analyses and the graphic documentation of the existing state are evaluated together in order to prepare the conservation project
