Abstract:

Russia began to pursue a policy of pressure on the Azerbaidjan society as a result of its occupation policy in the Caucasus. The first newspaper Tiflisskie Vedomosti (Tiflis News), which Russia used as an official broadcasting body to inform the people of the region about the decisions it made, was a step taken by Russia in the press. The first national step as a result of the cultural movements that began in Azerbaijan was the Ekinci newspaper issued by Hasan Melikzade Zerdabi. Ziya, Ziya-i Kafkasya, Keşkül, Song-i Russian and Irshad newspapers, which began to appear after Ekinci, were a turning point for the Azerbaijani press history. The breakthrough point for the Azerbaijani press, which was undergoing a rigorous follow-up and censorship by Russia until 1905 was the 1905 Russian era. After this date, the period passed until the Russian occupation in 1920, Azerbaijan press experienced a noticeable revival. After the 1920s occupation, and in the process that passed until 1980s, the press was a new follow-up and censorship, and the newspapers that were controlled became the official publication body of the state. The aim of this study, prepared by the lack of work on the Azerbaijani press, is to study and reveal the shortcomings of the period’s leading newspapers, magazines and ideologists based on first-hand sources and research works.
