Abstract:

The transport sector, which grows parallel to globalization, has a positive contribution to economic and social development and is the main consumer of renewable resources such as energy. Therefore, it is necessary to look at the fact of the development of transport systems from a broader perspective of the objective of achieving an optimal balance between economic, social and environmental objectives in the context of sustainability. Sustainable transportation system supports the development of logistics systems and the development of intermodal transportation by creating new opportunities. The objective of the intermodal transportation system, which is the basis of the European Union’s common transport policy, is to provide transportation services from door to door, using various types of transportation in a way that will create added value and reduce transport costs. In the intermodal transport, which is part of the global logistics chain, terminals are the places where the load is consolidated by collection, the transfer process and/or added value activity is carried out to another type of transport (Rail/Maritime/Air) and the cargo is transferred to the distribution system. Therefore, without terminals with a node point, transportation cannot be intermodal. In recent years, it is seen that terminals have grown according to the demands of the global economy to a more consolidated structure and have evolved in a way that will accommodate more and more logistics and added-value services. These terminals, logistics centers, distribution parks, etc. It is called in form. The objective of this study is to highlight the importance of terminals in the increasing intermodal transport system of the importance of a sustainable transport system, to study the new trends in the terminal understanding and to evaluate the developments in Turkey.
