The main focus of social work profession is the interaction between individual and his/her environment that affect their functioning capacity in society. Social worker devise professional interventions in order to develop social functioning of individuals, families, groups, organisations and societies. One of the ethical principle of social work is self determination which is defined as an individual’s right to make chocies and control his or her own life. In this article, self determination which is one of the most fundamental concept of social work, its historical developments, definitions, scope and usage in social work has been examined.
