Abstract:

When we look at the history of Arabic literature, the tabaqāt works provide us with the opportunity to learn about the lives and works of scholars in various fields such as poetry, rhetoric and grammar. In addition to information about individuals, they also provide us with insights into the political, social and cultural life of the era. Mohammad b. Othman Al Sanūsī, who lived in the 19th century, appears as the author of a biography book that sheds light on the intellectual history of Tunisia. The work titled Musāmarāt al-Ẓarīf bi-Ḥusn al-Taʽrīf includes biographies of scholars who lived in Tunisia for over three centuries during the reign of the Housaynī Dynasty (1705-1735 and 1756-1957). This book holds an important place in terms of the Arabic language and literature. Al Sanūsī was born during a period when the Ottoman Empire was dominant in the 19th century. He was known as a poet, writer and historian who was born into an aristocratic family and played significant roles in the recent history of Tunisia. In this study, the author's life and the work Musāmarāt al-Ẓarīf bi-Ḥusn al-Taʽrīf are examined to highlight his knowledge and abilities in the field of Arabic language and literature with the aim of making a contribution to the field.
