As the minimum wage is an instrument of social policy that affects different macroeconomic sizes, the determination of the minimum wage has become important. In this study, the relationship between minimum wages, inflation (TÜFE), unemployment and non-clean domestic income (GDP) variables in Turkey was studied taking into account the period 1982-2018. In the study, the relationships between these variables have been empirically demonstrated. The study used the ARDL limit test and also analyzed the relationship of the variables with each other with the Granger Cause Test. According to the findings, unemployment rates increase in the short term, while inflation rates increase in the short and long term result in GDP decreases. Growth in GDP reduces unemployment rate in the short and long term, while inflation rate increases unemployment rate in the short and long term. The increase in minimum wages also increases the unemployment rate. The GDP and unemployment rates are double-directional; the inflation rates and GDP are one-directional toward the minimum wage and one-directional toward the minimum wage.
The determination of the minimum wage has become important as the minimum wage is a social policy tool that has an impact on different macroeconomic sizes. In this study, considering the 1982-2018 period, the minimum wage in Turkey, inflation (CPI), unemployment and gross domestic product (GDP) has examined the relationship between variables. In the study, the relationships of these variables with each other were tried to be empirically revealed. ARDL bounds testing was used in the study and the relationship of variables with each other was analyzed with Granger Causality Test. According to the findings, unemployment rate increases in the short term, and inflation rates in the short and long term lead to decreases in GDP. Increases in GDP decrease the unemployment rate in the short and long term, while increases in the inflation rate decrease the unemployment rate in the short term and increase in the long term. In addition, increases in the minimum wage increase the unemployment rate. It is concluded that the GDP ratio and unemployment rate are bidirectional, and the inflation rate and GDP are one-way granger cause of each other towards the minimum wage.
