Abstract:

The issue of delimitation of maritime areas in the Eastern Mediterranean has emerged as an important problem among coastal countries since it is a relatively small and closed sea. In this study, the issue of limiting the maritime areas in the Eastern Mediterranean was examined through the concept of security and it was tried to shed light on the behind-the-scenes of the Eastern Mediterranean Crisis. The main purpose of the study was to reveal the reasons for the Turkish-Greek tension in the Eastern Mediterranean and to deal with the issue of delimitation of maritime jurisdiction areas within the discipline of international relations. In this context, first of all, the significance of the concept of security to the study was stressed. Subsequently, the historical background of the Turkish-Greek tension in the Eastern Mediterranean was mentioned and the relationship of this tension with the issue of delimitation of maritime areas in the Eastern Mediterranean was discussed. In the study, besides the historical process, issues such as geopolitical competition between global and regional powers, ontological security, and energy security in the delimitation of maritime areas in the Eastern Mediterranean were revealed. Finally, recommendations and suggestions about what can be done for the solution of the crisis in the Eastern Mediterranean were provided in the study.
