Günümüzde, organik hayvansal ürünlere olan talep her geçen gün artmaktadır. Manda yetiştiriciliği, organik hayvansal üretim için önemli bir üretim dalıdır. Son yıllarda dünya ve Türkiye'de, manda sayısında, önemli değişiklikler olmuştur. Genellikle ekstansif koşullarda yetiştirilmekte olan manda, kalitesiz kaba yemi süt ve ete dönüştürmesi, hastalıklara karşı diğer çiftlik hayvanlarına göre dayanıklılığı, sütünün kolesterol, etinin ise kolesterol ve yağ içeriğinin düşük olması gibi birçok avantaja sahiptir. Dünya’da çeşitli kıtalara dağılmış olarak 195 266 180 baş, Türkiye’de ise, 97 632 baş manda yetiştirilmektedir. 1991-2011 yılları arasında Türkiye manda popülasyonunda dramatik bir azalma (%73.33) olmuştur. Fakat, dünya manda sayısı aynı dönemde (%29.99) artmıştır. 2011 yılında Türkiye ve Dünya’da yetiştirilen mandalardan sırası ile 40 372 ton ve 93 016 859 ton süt, 1 615 ton ve 3 511 608 ton kırmızı et üretilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye ve Dünya’da manda yetiştiriciliğinin mevcut durumu, problemleri ve çözüm önerileri tartışılmıştır
