Introduction: The inadequacy of the maternal nutritional status can favor the development of gestational complications that can directly influence the health conditions of the fetus and the mother. Objective: To verify the prevalence of overweight and factors associated with the nutritional status of pregnant women attended at a philanthropic maternity hospital in São Luís - MA. Material and methods: This was a cross-sectional and analytical study, carried out at the gynecology outpatient clinic. 170 pregnant women aged 20 to 39 years participated. A questionnaire was applied with socioeconomic and demographic, lifestyle, reproductive and anthropometric variables. Multivariate analysis was performed using the Poisson regression method. Results: Of the 170 pregnant women evaluated, 88.2% were overweight. Excess weight was associated with women who lived with a partner (OR: 4.13; 95% CI 1.15 - 14.8) and those who were in the second gestational trimester (OR: 4.03; 95% CI 1.02-15.83). Discussion: The literature points out that pre-pregnancy excess weight, excessive weight gain during pregnancy and multiparity are risk factors for the development of excess weight. Conclusion: Identifying the factors that are associated with excess weight during pregnancy is of great relevance, since it allows greater attention to any other aggravating factor that can be added to these and thus early interventions are carried out in an attempt to minimize risks.
