Introduction and Objective: During the gestational period there is an increase in the demand for energy and nutrients and it is very important that the mother presents a good nutritional status to that of an appropriate fetal growth and avoid conceptional problems. This study aimed to evaluate the nutritional status and weight gain in pregnant women in a Basic Health Unit in Pelotas, RS, as well as the prevalence of gestational anemia among pregnant women and the use of supplementation of vitamins and minerals.Materials and methods: the study comprised pregnant women seen in the Service of Pre-Natal a UBS in Pelotas, RS during the period 2007 to 2009, with at least six prenatal consultations and with age > 19 years. The data were analyzed using the Epi Infoversion 6.0. The statistical analyzes were performed using the statistical package STATA® 10.0.Results and discussion: At the beginning of the pre-Christmas, the majority (64 %) of the pregnant women presented adequate nutritional status and, of these, 62.5% maintained that nutritional status. In relation to the weight gain in the 2nd quarter, few pregnant women presented satisfactory weight gain (20%). Already in the third quarter, this percentage increased (36%). As well as the gestational anemia, 48% of the pregnant women had at some time during their pregnancy, and 80% of pregnant women use of vitamin supplements and/or minerals during pregnancy. Conclusion: The results reinforce the importance of monitoring of weight, as well as vitamin supplements and mineral, for a better control of the state maternal and fetal development.
