Abstract This paper re-examines the possibilities of taking periods of paid temporary exit from employment during the entire life course as an alternative or in addition to tradition retirement. The structural scope of this proposal could effectively contribute to overcoming gender inequalities. We present a critical analysis, theoretical and historical, of the three-stage institutionalised life course (education, employment, and retirement) typical of modern societies, particularly regarding the way it feminises and marginalises domestic-family work and the reproduction of life. This dominant structural model can be regarded as both ageist and sexist. In contrast, temporary exit offers a firm proposal not only for active ageing and wider social inclusion for older people, but also for greater equality between women and men during the entire life course.
