Marshall-Lerner hipotezi, ihracat ve ithalatın fiyat esnekliklerinin mutlak değer olarak toplamı birden büyükse, ulusal paranın değer kaybının ticaret dengesi üzerinde olumlu etkiye sahip olacağını belirtir. Bu çalışmada, Türkiye’nin önemli ticaret ortakları (Çin, Almanya, İtalya, Fransa, ABD, İspanya, İngiltere ve Rusya) arasındaki ticaret dengesinin uzun dönemde, Türk lirasının değer kaybı ile olumlu etkilenip etkilenmeyeceği ampirik olarak araştırılmıştır. Birleşmiş Milletlerden alınan 1993-2014 dönemine ait yıllık verilerle yapılan Westerlund hata düzeltmeye dayalı panel eşbütüleşme testi ve FGLS yöntemi sonuçları, Marshall- Lerner şartının geçerli olmadığını ifade etmektedir. Bununla birlikte, ulusal gelir artışı, pozitif gelir esnekliği nedeniyle ithalatı artırırken ticaret dengesi üzerinde olumsuz etkiye sahip olmaktadır.
The Marshall-Lerner hypothesis suggests that if the total of price flexibilities of exports and imports are greater than the absolute value, the loss of value of the national currency will have a positive impact on the trade balance. In this study, the trade balance between Turkey’s important trade partners (China, Germany, Italy, France, the United States, Spain, Britain and Russia) has been studied as ambitious whether the value loss of the Turkish lira will be positively affected in the long term. The Westerlund panel matching test based on error correction and the results of the FGLS method, with annual data from the United Nations from 1993-2014, indicate that the Marshall-Lerner condition is not valid. However, national income increase has a negative impact on trade balance while increasing imports due to positive income flexibility.
