Abstract:

The main purpose of this study is to reveal the perceptions of academically successful and unsuccessful students towards success and failure. The study is a qualitative study based on phenomenology pattern. The study group of the study was determined using criterion sampling method which is purposive sampling method. In the research, focus group interview technique was used and the data were collected through a semi-structured interview form. As a result of the study, it is concluded that the group with high academic success considers themselves successful in terms of both academic and life success but perceives academic success and life success differently. In order to succeed; they read regularly, do daily repetitions but do not make a study plan. In addition, it is observed that teacher, school and family have a positive effect on students' achievement and technology has both positive and negative effect on students' achievement. On the other hand, it is concluded that the group with low academic success considers themselves as unsuccessful in terms of academic achievement, but finds themselves successful in life. In academic failures; not reading books, technology and peer aspect are found to have significant effects as well as being unplanned.
