Aydınlanma Dönemi olarak adlandırılan 18. yüzyıl, birçok toplumsal ve kültürel değişimi ve gelişimi beraberinde getirmiştir. Bu yüzyıl aynı zamanda, modern güzel sanatlar sisteminin ortaya çıktığı ve bir önceki yüzyılın aksine birçok kültür kurumunun tarih sahnesinde belirdiği ve yükselişe geçtiği bir dönemdir. Sanat ve sanat kurumları açısından oldukça önem taşıyan söz konusu yüzyıl, sadece aristokrasinin değil, aynı zamanda gelişmekte olan orta sınıfın da sanat ile bağ kurmak istediği bir döneme işaret etmektedir. Aydınlanma Avrupası, tüm bu özelliklerinin yanı sıra kadın kimliğinin tanımı konusunda da çok büyük çaba sarf etmiştir. Habermas tarafından kuramsallaştırılan “kamusal alan”da belirmeye başlayan kadının, bu süreçte fikir, bilgi ve sanat üretiminde roller üstlenmeye başladığını söylemek mümkündür. Ancak, Akıl Çağı’nda kadın sanatçının görünürlüğü sorunludur, çünkü dönem koşulları dâhilinde kadının sanatla uğraşma fırsatları, daha çok erkeklerin sahip olduğu haklar sınırına girmektedir. Öyle ki, kadının, katı sosyal sözleşmelerle belirlenmiş rolleri ve hakları arasında sanatçılık çok tartışmalı bir yerde durmaktadır. Kadın sanatçının izinden giden bu makale, yöntem açısından, hem analitik hem de biyografik bir yaklaşım izlemiştir. Dönemin toplumsal yapılanması, kültür ortamı ve siyasal atmosferi gibi koşullar da göz önünde bulundurularak, sanat ve sanatçının konumunu özetleyen ve ardından kadın sanatçıların sanat dünyasında görünürlük kazanma koşullarına ve çabalarına ışık tutan bu çalışma, özellikle yüzyılın öne çıkan sanatçıları üzerinden bir değerlendirme yapmayı hedeflemiştir. Bunun için, genel anlamda bu dönemde, kadın sanatçının, sanatçı olarak var olma yolunda karşılaştığı köşe taşları ve engeller metnin zeminini oluşturmuştur. Ayrıca, döneme damgasını vuran profesyonel kadın sanatçıların sanatsal üretimleri, çalışma koşulları ve patronaj sistemiyle olan ilişkileri, bağımsız olarak değil, toplumsal faktörler de gözetilerek irdelenmiştir. Dolayısıyla, burada, ana sorunsalı oluşturan kadın sanatçıların profesyonelliğe adım atma çabaları, Louvre’ın kapılarını aralamaları ve Salon sergilerinde başarıyla boy göstermeleri, akademilerde söz sahibi olmaları ve bu süreçte karşılaştıkları açmazlar, özellikle sanat piyasasının mevcut konumu ve dönemin toplumsal cinsiyet modeli göz önünde bulundurularak ele alınmaktadır.
The 18th century, called the Age of Enlightenment, brought many social and cultural changes and developments. This century is also a period in which the modern system of beautiful arts emerged and, unlike the previous century, many cultural institutions appeared on the historical stage and went up. This century, which is of great importance for the institutions of art and art, marks a period in which not only the aristocracy, but also the developing middle class wants to connect with art. The Enlightenment Europe has made a lot of effort, in addition to all these characteristics, to define the identity of the woman. It is possible to say that the woman, who began to appear in the "public space" theoretized by Habermas, in this process began to take on roles in the production of ideas, knowledge and art. However, in the Age of Mind, the visibility of the female artist is problematic, because, within the period conditions, the opportunity of the woman to deal with the art is beyond the limits of the rights that more men have. So, between the women’s roles and rights determined by strict social contracts, art is in a very controversial place. This article, which goes from the trace of the female artist, has followed a methodological and biographical approach. Considering the conditions such as the social structure of the period, the cultural environment and the political atmosphere, this study, which summarizes the position of the art and artist and then keeps light on the conditions and efforts of female artists to gain visibility in the art world, aimed at making an assessment, especially through the leading artists of the century. For this, in general, in this period, the corner stones and obstacles that the female artist encountered in the way to exist as an artist formed the ground of the text. Furthermore, the relationships with the artistic production, working conditions and patronage system of the professional female artists, which hit the mark of the period, have been monitored by non-independent, but also by social factors. Therefore, here, the efforts of the main problem-making female artists to step into professionalism are addressed, they open the doors of the Louvre and successfully display in the Salon exhibitions, they are prominent in the academies and they do not open what they encounter in this process, especially taking into account the current position of the art market and the social gender model of the period.

In addition to all these features, the Enlightenment in Europe has made great efforts to define female identity. For this process, it is possible to say that women, who started to appear in the “public sphere” theorized by Habermas, started to assume roles in the production of ideas, knowledge, and art. However, in the Age of Reason, the visibility of female artists is challenging, because, under the circumstances, women's opportunities to engage in art are more likely to fall into the rights of men. In fact, among the roles and rights of women defined by strict social conventions, artistry stands in a very controversial place. Following the footsteps of female artists, this paper follows an analytical and biographical approach in terms of methodology. Considering the conditions such as social structure, cultural environment and political atmosphere of the period, this study summarizes the position of art and artist and then sheds light on the conditions and efforts of women artists to gain visibility in the art world. For this reason, the cornerstones and obstacles that the female artist encounters on her way to exist as an artist in this period, in general, were the basis of the text. Furthermore, the artistic productions, working conditions and relations with the patronage system of the professional female artists who left their mark on the period were examined by considering social factors. Therefore, in this study the main discussion encounters the efforts of female artists to step into professionalism, entering into Louvre and gaining success in Salon exhibitions, being members of academies and the dilemmas they face during this process. All these issues are stated considering the current position of the art market and the gender model of the period.
