Kimi toplumlarda asgari ihtiyaçlarını karşılayan birey yoksul olarak görülmezken, bazı toplumlarda, zorunlu ihtiyaçları dışında kalan eğlence, seyahat etme gibi gereksinimlerini karşılayamayan birey yoksul kabul edilebilmektedir. Böylece yoksulluk, farklı tanımları yapılan bir olgu olarak karşımıza çıkmaktadır. Yoksulluk bazen, 1789 Fransız devriminde olduğu gibi, bir milletin kaderini değiştirecek güçte toplumsal bir değişime neden olabilir. Bazen de toplumun kanayan bir yarası olarak varlığını sürdürmeye devam eder. Ancak yoksulluk, belli bir noktadan sonra, genellikle, bireyin karakteri üzerinde değişimlere neden olur. İnsanın alışageldiği ihtiyaçlarını karşılayamaz hale gelmesi, kişilik yapısı üzerinde derin etkileri ortaya çıkarabilir. İnceleyeceğimiz Germinal ve Sevgili Arsız Ölüm romanlarında bunu karşılaştırmalı olarak ele alacağız. İlk roman; Fransız yazar Emile Zola’nın, genel olarak, 19. yüzyıl Fransız ekonomisindeki çalkantılardan dolayı halkın ezildiği, aile kurumunun çöktüğü, yozlaşmanın görüldüğü bir toplumsal yapıyı, gerçek bir hikayeden esinlenerek kaleme aldığı ‘Germinal’ adlı romandır. Yazıldığı dönemde çok ses getiren roman; ülkenin kuzey bölgesinde bulunan kömür işletmelerinin ve buna bağlı olarak maden işçilerinin varlık ile yokluk arasında yaşam mücadelesi vermelerini, aile yapısının bundan nasıl etkilendiğini çarpıcı örneklerle gösterir. Maden işçilerinin zor koşullar altında karın tokluğuna ve aileleri ile ilgili birçok taviz vererek çalışırken işverenlerin şatafatlı bir yaşam sürmesi, ölen işçilerin dikkate bile alınmadan madendeki zararların ön plana çıkması insanlığın nasıl öldüğünü göstermesi açısından önemlidir. Diğeri ise, Türk edebiyatının günümüz yazarlarından Latife Tekin’in olaylara farklı bir uslupla yaklaşarak yazdığı ‘Sevgili Arsız Ölüm’ adlı romanıdır. Romanda, köyden kente göç eden bir ailenin ekonomik gücünü kaybetmesi sonucu aile yapısında ne gibi değişiklikler olabileceği gösterilir.
In some societies, the individual that meets their minimum needs is not considered poor, while in some societies, the individual that is not able to meets their needs, such as entertainment, travel, which remains beyond their compulsory needs, can be considered poor. This is the fact that poverty is differently defined. Poverty sometimes, as in the 1789 French Revolution, can lead to a social change in the power to change the fate of a nation. Sometimes it continues to exist as a bloody wound of society. But poverty, after a certain point, usually causes changes in the individual's character. The fact that a person becomes unable to meet the needs they are used to, can have profound effects on the personality structure. In the Germinal and Dear Untold Death novels we will review this comparatively. The first novel is the novel "Germinal" by the French writer Emile Zola, in general, a social structure in which the people were suppressed, the family institution collapsed, the corruption was seen, inspired by a real story, because of the devastations in the French economy of the 19th century. The novel, which brought a lot of noise in the time of its writing, shows the coal companies in the northern region of the country and, consequently, the mining workers make a life struggle between existence and absence, with amazing examples of how the family structure is affected by it. While the mining workers under difficult circumstances work by giving many agreements about the womb and their families, it is important that the employers live a lively life, and that the damages in the mining without even taking into account the dead workers come to the forefront to show how mankind died. The other is the novel "Love Untold Death" written by Latife Tekin, a contemporary writer of Turkish literature, by approaching the events with a different service. The novel shows what changes in the family structure could occur as a result of the loss of economic power of a family who migrates from the village to the city.
