Abstract:

In this study, the Old Uyghur Sena-Upasena story was analyzed from a pragmatic perspective within the framework of speech act theory. The illocutionary acts behind the utterances of the characters in the story were identified and classified according to J. Searle's (1975) taxonomy. In addition to this, the classified pragmatic speech acts were analyzed in detail. In the introduction part of the study, the purpose of the study, the reason for choosing the story text etc. were tried to be clarified and theoretical information about pragmatics and speech act theory was given within the scope of the theoretical framework. After informing the reader about the story of Sena-Upasena, the illocutionary acts in the utterances in the story started to be analyzed. At the very beginning of the analysis part, some pieces of information about the methodology of the study and the methods followed are shown. With this study, it has been proven once again that Old Turkish documents can be examined with linguistic methods and different perspectives, in particular Old Uyghur. Also, with the analysis of an Old Uyghur story within the framework of speech act theory, it is aimed to increase the number of such studies in the field.
