Abstract "Chronicler of the disturbing, narrator of invisible shadows", Merino could not avoid resorting to the use of monsters, as seen not so much in his novels as in his short stories and mini-stories. In many texts the monster raises the issue of the identity of the contemporary subject. In others it comes to alert us to certain deplorable aspects of our society. In some works Merino takes particular care to tell us that the monster is in fact within us. The land of dreams and insomnia is also very rich in terms of the appearance of monsters, which in this case are the expression of the writer's deep-seated fears. In his latest book, El libro de las horas contadas, the most frightening, picturesque and even unspeakable monsters appear.
