This study discusses the economic dimension of the relations between Turkey and the Middle East through foreign trade in the period 2000-2019. In this framework, in terms of years and countries, we are looking for answers to questions such as how the trade relations follow, what kind of changes have occurred over time, how the general view of foreign trade is, what is the share of the Middle East in the total volume of foreign trade in Turkey and how the trade has followed over time, how determining non-economic factors are in economic relations. Compared to previous periods, the relations between Turkey and the Middle East countries have been varied and greatly increased during this period. Basically, this situation is in line with the general trends called globalization and characterized by increasing multilateral relations between countries. This study is based on the official data published by TÜIK and the data presented by various international organizations. The basic assumption of the study is that non-regional factors play a decisive role in the course of bilateral trade relations and that diplomatic and political crises in bilateral relations do not find the same response in trade relations.
Based on the data concerning foreign trade between 2000 and 2019, this study examines the economic aspect of the relations between Turkey and other Middle Eastern countries. In this context, I aspire to answer the following questions: from the point of view of years and countries, what kind of a picture do trade relations present? What changes have been seen throughout this period? What is the general outlook of foreign trade like? What is the share of the Middle East in Turkey's total foreign trade volume and what has it been like during the period under consideration? Lastly, to what extent have non-economic factors been a determining factor in trade relations between Turkey and other Middle Eastern countries? It can be observed that compared to earlier periods, the relations between Turkey and Middle Eastern countries have been diversified and seen an increase. This picture thus seems compatible with the process of globalization which is characterized by a rise in multi-faceted relations among different countries. This study is based on official figures of the Turkish Statistical Institute and various data provided by a number of international organizations. The main argument of this research is that extraterritorial factors play a determining role on bilateral trade relations and bilateral political and diplomatic conflicts and crisis are not equally reflected on trade relations.
