Abstract:

While human beings shape the artificial environment, they also reflect their culture and lifestyle. This situation has turned into the changing life with the industrial revolution and its negative effects on nature gradually increasing. Today, especially in architecture, the reason for the popularity of ecology and sustainability is the necessity of reconciling with nature and taking urgent measures to stop the negative changes in nature. However, in order to develop sustainability and ecological designs in spaces, it is necessary to consider the artificial environment shaped in the historical process. In this study, three residential buildings, which were built in Kayseri-Talas in the 19th century and are known to belong to the famous Armenian family of Talas, Gulbenkians, were examined within the scope of ecological architecture criteria that are valid and accepted on the subject. The criteria in the international certification systems were guiding while the study was conducted. Accordingly, compliance with the criteria of ecology, energy, economy, indoor environmental quality, health and welfare, innovation, management, land use, transportation, renewable technology, water, environmental pollution, CO₂ emission, material and waste were investigated in the three houses examined. As a result, it has been observed that there are ecological approaches in the historical houses. With reference to the findings, it can be said that it is not difficult to produce ecological, nature-friendly and energy-efficient houses for today and the future. It is expected that the study will contribute to future studies.
