2011 yılında Güney Kıbrıs Rum Yönetimi (GKRY) ile İsrail arasında yapılan anlaşmayla Doğu Akdeniz’de gaz arama faaliyetlerinin resmiyet kazanmasıyla bölgede ülkeler arası enerji mücadelesi yaşanmaya başlamıştır. Bu mücadelenin tarafı sadece Doğu Akdeniz kıyıdaş ülkeleri değil aynı zamanda ABD, AB, Rusya gibi bölge dışı ülkeleridir. Bu makalede, Doğu Akdeniz’de yapılan hidrokarbon arama faaliyetleri ile gerçekleşen gaz keşiflerinin bölgesel ve küresel ölçekte yarattığı anlaşmazlığı/çatışmayı ve bölge jeopolitiği üzerindeki etkisini değerlendirmek amaçlanmıştır. Bu araştırma, günümüzde enerji kaynakları üzerine yaşanan mücadelede Doğu Akdeniz’in küresel ve bölgesel ülkeler açısından değerini ortaya koymak bakımından önemlidir. Çalışmada coğrafi sınırlandırma dikkate alınmış ve Doğu Akdeniz havzası araştırma alanı olarak belirlenmiştir. Ayrıca havzadaki hidrokarbon enerji kaynakları ve ülkelerin bu enerji kaynakları dolayısıyla bölge politikaları çalışmaya dâhil edilmiştir. Kapsamlı bir literatür taraması yapılmış, güncel veri ve bilimsel yayınlardan, uluslararası enerji ajanslarının raporlarından faydalanılmıştır. Araştırmada Doğu Akdeniz’in coğrafi konumu ve bu konumundan kaynaklanan değeri kavramsal çerçevede verilmiştir. Siyasi coğrafya ve enerji coğrafyası perspektifinden bölgenin stratejik ve jeopolitik önemi vurgulanmıştır. Yunanistan ve GKRY’nin, Doğu Akdeniz’de Türkiye’nin egemenlik haklarını ihlali bölgede bir çatışma yaşanmasına neden olmaktadır. Taraflar arasında yaşanan anlaşmazlık ve çözümsüzlük hem bölge ülkeleri hem de Doğu Akdeniz’de çıkar yarışına giren diğer ülkeler açısından sorunların derinleşmesine ve gerginliklerin artmasına yol açmaktadır.
In 2011, with the agreement between the Southern Cyprus Rum Administration (GKRY) and Israel, with the officiality of gas search activities in the Eastern Mediterranean, the region began to experience inter-national energy struggle. The side of this struggle is not only the Eastern Mediterranean coastal countries but also the non-regional countries such as the United States, the EU, Russia. This article aims to assess the dispute/conflict that gas discoveries in the Eastern Mediterranean hydrocarbon search activities create on a regional and global scale and their impact on the geopolitics of the region. This research is important in order to reveal the value of the Eastern Mediterranean in the current struggle for energy resources in the global and regional countries. In the study, geographical limitations were taken into account and the Eastern Mediterranean pool was identified as a research area. In addition, the hydrocarbon energy sources in the pool and the country’s energy sources have been involved in the work of regional policies. A comprehensive literature scan was made, the current data and scientific publications, the reports of the international energy agencies were taken. The study has given the geographical location of the Eastern Mediterranean and the value derived from this location in a conceptual framework. From a political geography and energy geography perspective, the strategic and geopolitical importance of the region has been emphasized. Greece and GKRY violate the sovereignty rights of Turkey in the Eastern Mediterranean, causing a conflict in the region. Disputes and dissolutions between the parties lead to deepening problems and increased tensions in terms of both the regional countries and other countries entering the competition of interest in the Eastern Mediterranean.
In 2011, with the agreement between the Greek Cypriot Administration (GCAS) and Israel, the gas exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean became official and the energy struggle between the countries started in the region. The side of this struggle are not only countries with a coast to the Eastern Mediterranean but also non-regional countries such as USA, EU and Russia. In this article, it is aimed to evaluate the dispute / conflict created by the hydrocarbon exploration activities in the Eastern Mediterranean and the impact on the regional geopolitics. This research is important in terms of revealing the value of the Eastern Mediterranean in terms of global and regional countries in the struggle on energy resources today. In the study, geographical limitation was taken into consideration and the Eastern Mediterranean basin was determined as a research area. In addition, hydrocarbon energy sources in the basin and regional policies of the countries depending on these energy sources are included in the study. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, and current data and scientific publications and reports of international energy agencies were used. In the research, the geographical position of the Eastern Mediterranean and its value arising from this position are given in a conceptual framework. The strategic and geopolitical importance of the region was emphasized from the perspective of political geography and energy geography. Violations of Turkey's sovereign rights in the eastern Mediterranean by Greece and GASC, has led to a clash in the area. Disagreement and non-resolution between the groups leads to deepening of problems and increasing tensions for both the countries of the region and other countries participating in the race of interest in the Eastern Mediterranean.
