Deizm, âleme müdahil olmayan tanrı anlayışıyla ilkçağ Yunan felsefesinde izleri olan felsefi ve dini bir akımdır. Ancak Rönesans, Reform ve Aydınlanma çağı deizmin yoğun bir şekilde tartışıldığı dönem olmuştur. Deizm, günümüzde de popülaritesi olan ve seküler hayat tarzında anlamını bulan bir düşüncedir. Yarattıktan sonra evrene ve insana müdahil olmayan tanrı teorisi sekülerizm ile hayatın pratiğine aktarılmıştır. Deistlere göre Tanrı evreni mükemmel ve noksansız, insanı da akıllı olarak yaratmıştır. İnsan Tanrı’nın kendisine bahşettiği akıl ile dünyadaki sorumluluk ve görevlerini yerine getirebilecek kapasitededir. Ayrıca akıllı bir varlık olan insan beşerî ve ahlaki esasları da idrak edebilecek bir kabiliyete sahiptir. Evrene sonradan müdahaleye gerek duyulduğu takdirde bu, Tanrı’nın evreni mükemmel yaratmadığı ve Tanrı’nın mükemmeli yaratmaktan aciz olduğu anlamına gelir. Seküler hayat tarzında insan yaşamında metafizik ve dini değerler yadsınarak, tamamen maddi ve dünyevi bir yaşam felsefesi benimsenmiştir. Yine bu anlayışta, İlahi vahyin göz ardı edildiği, dini vecibelerin kabul görmediği dünyevi bir anlayış yaşam tarzı haline gelmiştir. Sekülerizm “dinin sosyal yapıdaki egemenlik ve geçerliliğini yitirmesi, doğaüstü olayların tabii ve dünyevi olaylarmış gibi algılanması, insan aklının dini ve metafizik bağlardan kurtarılması, dinin bir vicdan meselesi haline getirilmesidir. Sekülerizmin Müslüman dünyasındaki kullanımı diyebileceğimiz dünyevîleşme, dünyaya gereğinden fazla meyletme, dini yaşantıyı ihmal edecek kadar dünyalıklarla meşgul olma gibi anlamlara gelmektedir. Bunun sonucu olarak kişinin sosyal, kültürel, ekonomik ve benzeri etkenlerle, hayatı sadece tecrübe edilenle sınırlaması, kendilerini Allah’tan bağımsız görerek kendi öz benliğine yabancılaşması ve gaflete düşmesidir.
Deism is a philosophical and religious movement that has traces in ancient Greek philosophy with its understanding of God who does not intervene in the universe. However, the Renaissance and Reformation processes and the Age of Enlightenment were the periods when deism was discussed intensively. Deism is an idea that is still popular today and finds its meaning in the secular lifestyle. The theory of God, who does not interfere with the universe and humans after creation, has been transferred to the practice of life through secularism. According to Deists, God created the universe perfect and complete and man as intelligent. Man has the capacity to fulfill his responsibilities and duties in the world with the intelligence God has given him. In addition, humans, who are intelligent beings, have the ability to comprehend human and moral principles. If there is a need to intervene in the universe later, this would mean saying that God did not create the universe perfectly and that God is incapable of creating perfection. In the secular lifestyle, metaphysical and religious values in human life are rejected and a completely material and worldly philosophy of life is adopted. Again, in this understanding, a worldly understanding in which Divine revelation is ignored and religious obligations are not accepted has become a lifestyle. Secularism is “the loss of dominance and validity of religion in the social structure, the perception of supernatural events as natural and worldly events, the liberation of the human mind from religious and metaphysical ties, and the making of religion a matter of conscience. Secularization, which we can call the use of secularism in the Muslim world, means being too inclined towards the world, being too busy with worldly things to the point of neglecting religious life. As a result, due to social, cultural, economic and similar factors, they limit life only to what is experienced, see themselves as independent from God, and become alienated from their own self and fall into heedlessness.
