Abstract:

The Sustainable Development Goals are a social call for a liveable environment, the eradication of poverty, and a prosperous life for people. One of the sustainable development goals is quality education. Educational institutions have a great responsibility for a sustainable world. In Turkey, efforts for a sustainable environment have increased in recent years. The most permanent solutions for solving environmental problems are to educate children about the environment at an early age and to transform these decisions into behavior so that they can make their lives sustainable as environmentally literate individuals. For the sustainability of our planet, the concept of recycling was analyzed with in the scope of the Life Science and Social Studies curricula prepared in 2023 and the Science curriculum prepared in 2018. The research aims is to determine how much the concept of recycling is included in the updated Life Science, Social Studies and Science curricula with in the scope of sustainable environmental education for primary school students. The research is a qualitative study. Data were collected through document analyzed in the curricula developed by the Ministry of National Education. The data were analysis by descriptive content analysis. As a result of the study, it was predicted that the studies in the field of recycling should be included more in the curricula and the course hours should be increased. In addition, it is suggested that the number of acquisitions required in the field of recycling and waste should be given more for sustainable environmental education in the curricula. To create create a positive environmental attitude in students, it is recommended that teachers and teacher candidates should receive training in the field of sustainability.
