Abstract:

The general population census in Türkiye was carried out in 1927. The general population censuses were repeated every five years from 1935 to 1990, ten years later, in 2000, the last general census was made. Since 2007, censuses have been carried out every year through the Address Based Population Registration System. The population of Türkiye has shown a continuous increase according to the census results. The general population censuses in Tunisia have been carried out for five or 10 years from 1921 to 2014 and are published by the National Statistical Institute. In this study, the data of the Tunisian National Statistical Institute and the Turkish Statistical Institute were used extensively, the changes in the population of Türkiye between 1927-2022 and Tunisia between the years 1921-2022 and the future expectations according to population projections were discussed. This study was handled from a geographical point of view and the result was reached. Demographic transformation theory; it is called the transition from societies with high mortality and fertility rates to low both of them. Türkiye and Tunisia are going through the third stage of this theory, where birth and death rates decline and balanced population growth is experienced. In addition, Türkiye and Tunisia are getting older every year, and in 2023 they will be classified as “very old” countries. In this study; In order to determine the demographic transformation of Türkiye and Tunisia, the characteristics of the population (gender status, age structure, household size, education level, distribution of workers by economic sector) were also taken into consideration for better analyze the population, which is one of the basic study subjects of human geography. In this article, population projections are examined and future demographic opportunities as well as the work to be done are revealed.
