Özet:

Understanding human motivation requires the consideration of innate psychological needs. This study aims to adapt the “Psychological Need States Scale in Sport (PNSS-S)” into Turkish and test the scale’s validity and reliability in athletes. In the determination of the study sample, convenience sampling method was adopted. The universe of the study consists of active athletes between the ages of 14-26 in different sports branches, and the sample consists of 169 athletes who were selected by random sampling method and who accepted to participate in the research voluntarily. The Turkish version of the Psychological Needs in Sports Scale consists of 7 Likert type 23 items and 6 sub-dimensions (Autonomy satisfaction, Autonomy frustration, Competence satisfaction, Competence frustration, Relatedness satisfaction, Relatedness frustration). For the construct validity of the scale, confirmatory factor analysis was conducted and Cronbach alpha internal consistency and CR coefficients were used to test the reliability. According to the results of the confirmatory factor analysis, the factor loads of the items of the scale ranged from 0.43 to 0.86. According to the analysis results obtained, it was seen that the model had good fit index values. The chi-square fit test yielded χ²/Sd=1.976, while the root mean square error of approximation value was 0.079. Furthermore, the normalized fit index was 0.90 while the non-normalized fit index was 0.95. The comparative fit index was 0.95 while the goodness of fit index was 0.92 in addition to the corrected fit index of 0.86. The scale’s Cronbach alpha internal consistency and CR coefficients (0.64-0.84) are acceptable values. The results obtained in the study revealed that the Turkish adaptation of the “Psychological Need States Scale in Sport” met the validity and reliability conditions to evaluate psychological needs in sports. In conclusion, it can be stated that the Psychological Need States Scale in Sport is a reliable and valid measurement tool. It can be suggested for researchers or coaches who would like to investigate and analyze the psychological needs of Turkish athletes to use the scale.
